Grace of wrath
First off, THANK YOU Grace of Wrath for all your hard work on the Fresh Meat Program! It has been a huge success and everyone has had a lot of fun so far.
What is the origin of your derby name and/or number?
My friend from home came up with my name - it incorporates my real name plus a literature pun. Woo! My number (781) is the area code of the south shore of Massachusetts, where I grew up.
Like so many derby players, I first heard about derby from the movie Whip It. I secretly (not so secretly?) want to be Ellen Page when I grow up, so it really spoke to me. About a year later, I attended a bout in Santa Barbara and decided that I needed to play derby in the area, found a league, bought some skates, and went for it.
Do you have a goal for this year?
So many goals! I want to improve my track awareness in general, and I would really like to get better at hitting people. I also want to get better at bracing/being braced and stopping those jammers. Long-term, I'd like to try being a pivot or even a jammer.
What advice do you have for new skaters?
There are lots of things in derby that seem IMPOSSIBLE when you start, but eventually get a whole lot easier with practice. Everyone struggles in the beginning. Skate as much as you can! Also, be nice to yourself and get a good pair of knee pads, your knees will thank you.
What are your non-derby hobbies?
Making jewelry, riding/fixing bikes, playing ukulele, and taking photographs.
What do you do in real life?
I'm a PhD student in ecology at UC Davis.
